【TIPS】 morning / afternoon / evening / night は何時から何時？

ある生徒の自由英作文をチェックしていたときのやりとりです：

生徒：昼の11時でしたってどう書けばいいですか？

自分：It was 11 in the morning. か It was 11 A.M. ね 

生徒：朝じゃないのに morning なんですか？

確かにそうですよね。『これが正解』というものはありません（特に日の入りから日の出までは evening – night – morning と推移しますが境界線は不明確です）が、おおよその目安はあります。図にするとこんな感じです（Oxford Dictionary を参考に作成）：

morning
The period of time between midnight and noon, especially from sunrise to noon.

afternoon
The time from noon or lunchtime to evening.

evening
The period of time at the end of the day, usually from about 6 p.m. to bedtime.

night
The period from sunset to sunrise in each twenty-four hours.

なお『夜中の2時でした』を表すときは注意が必要です。図からすると "It was two at night." としてもいいような気がしますが "It was two in the morning." の方が自然です。Google で検索すると "it was two in the morning" が 約 399,000 件 ヒットするのに対し、"it was two at night" は 約 11 件 しかヒットしません（2019年6月8日現在）：
